Dental Crowns Can Improve and Restore Broken Teeth

While a dental crown can greatly improve your tooth's appearance, it isn't only used for aesthetic purposes. Dental crowns, also known as caps, can improve your oral health in a variety of ways, including making a tooth stronger, attaching a bridge, or protecting a weak tooth, they often are used to restore broken teeth as well.

At Yuma Dental, our friendly and caring staff works hard to improve teeth and keep our patients smiling. Our dentists can provide temporary dental crowns, which are created in our office in Yuma, AZ, or permanent crowns, which are custom-made in a dental laboratory. Our temporary crowns are made of acrylic or stainless steel and are most commonly used as a short-term solution until a permanent crown has been created for you.

If a permanent dental crown is necessary, we ensure all crowns are securely attached and precisely fit to give you a healthy and worry-free smile. Typically, permanent dental crowns last a minimum of seven years, but in many cases, our dental crowns have been known to last up to 40 years.

There are three common types of crowns that can be used based on your unique needs - metal, ceramic or ceramic-veneered metal. Metal and ceramic-veneered metal caps are the most durable and are normally used in molars where there is the most wear and tear from chewing. As they most closely resemble the appearance of your actual teeth, ceramic, also known as porcelain caps, are used primarily for front teeth to ensure a natural-looking smile.

Our knowledgeable dentists will examine your teeth and give you personalized expert guidance on which type of dental crown is best for you.

All-Porcelain Dental Crowns

This metal-free option provides the most natural appearance as they can be crafted to closely match your natural tooth's color and translucency. While they are not as strong as ceramic-veneered metal or all-metal dental crowns, porcelain caps are an ideal choice for more visible front teeth. They are also the best option if you have any metal allergies or sensitivities.

Gold Dental Crowns

Gold caps are a great option for less visible teeth. They are strong, durable and extremely malleable to make a more precise fit. And unlike porcelain dental crowns, gold caps are not susceptible to chipping.

Metal and Porcelain Dental Crowns

For a durable cap with a natural appearance, porcelain-fused metal caps might be the right solution for you. This type of dental crown has a strong metal structure with a natural-looking porcelain outer shell. While the metal base makes matching the translucency of a natural tooth difficult, ceramic-veneered metal caps can provide you with the right mix of durability and aesthetics for a strong and beautiful smile.
